There are three types of algae: red, brown and green. In Norway, there are almost 500 species of algae from across the three groups. We focus most of our harvesting efforts on the six species below, partly because of their abundance, and partly due to their excellent flavour and texture. Click on the images below to find out more about each type.
As one of the few companies that harvests wild algae, protecting the ecosystem is our highest priority. We use carefully reviewed harvesting and monitoring methods to ensure healthy regrowth and minimal impact to marine life. We harvest only in the cleanest waters, away from human activity. We capture our harvest data and report the catch to Råfisklaget.
Harvesting your own seaweed is a rewarding hobby that connects you to one of the world’s most ancient food sources. We’ve put together a handy forager’s guide to show you exactly how to get started.
Lofoten Seaweed is DEBIO approved, and our seaweed is certified organic. DEBIO is recognised by Organic Agriculture Europe. To ensure that our supply satisfies demand, we sometimes supplement our products with organically farmed winged kelp from Lofoten.
